Approximately 80 percent of people never set goals although most believe that goal setting is important to attain better in life, according to Douglas Vermeeren, an international speaker and best-selling author on goal setting and human performance. Of 20 percent that does set goals, 70 percent fail to meet the goals they have set.

The statistics are discouraging. I had countless unsuccessful attempts myself in my quest for a sure-fire approach to goal setting that works. After reading articles and books on goal setting and trying out universally accepted principles such as SMART/SMARTER, I thought it would work out for me. Sadly it didn’t. I did achieve more of the goals I set but I felt there should be still more to it: Goal Setting. Then, I came up with this rule in goal setting for myself…
Any Goal I set MUST inspire me!
My goals must trigger positive thinking and excitement within me and drive actions with-out, drawing me signpost by signpost toward them. The number one reason people set goals is that goals are important for them to be who they want to be and to do and have everything they want in life. In other words, we set goals because they bring clarity on what we need desperately. It makes life meaningful, that’s what goals are all about, aren’t they?
58% surveyed in Goal-Free Living by Stephen Shapiro say they are consciously sacrificing today’s happiness in the belief that achieving their goals will bring fulfillment. Unfortunately, 41% say each goal achieved brings little, if any, satisfaction despite all the hard work.
It is vitally important that any goal you set inspire yourself every step of the way until you get there. To do so, it must be aligned with our life purpose. Your goals should not only look forward but also improve your present moment.
